The moment has finally arrived. The German wonder kid Sebastian Vettel has officially been named champion of the 2011 Grand Prix.
The Red Bull-Renault driver has been ahead of the competition for months. However, the ace finally secured back to back titles at last week’s Japanese Grand Prix, at Suzuka Circuit. It sees Vettel become the youngest racer in history to retain the championship, winning two years in succession.
Vettel, ironically, didn’t even win the race that guaranteed the championship. He finished in third, behind winner Jenson Button and second placed Fernando Alonso. But it was still enough to lock up the season.
Last weekend turned out well for British sportsmen in Japan. Tennis star Andy Murray beat Rafael Nadal in The Open and the well known McLaren-Mercedes driver won the Grand Prix.
But, despite his triumph, Button needed his rival, Sebastian Vettel, to fail to garner any points. That would keep him in the running for the championship. However; finishing the race in third place earned Vettel 15 points. This gave him a final total of 324. It marked a championship win which has been deemed `perfect` and `phenomenal `. It is the culmination of an impressive run of wins.
But, although Vettel’s already champ, it doesn’t make the season over. There are still many questions to answer. Who will get the coveted second spot? Will RBR-Renault’s Mark Webber win a race? Can Lewis Hamilton salvage something from what’s been called a less than auspicious season?
Well, events press on unabated, with the next race right around the corner. It is the 2011 Formula 1 Korean Grand Prix, due for this weekend. It will take place on Sunday the 16th of October at 3PM local time. The location shall be Korea International Circuit; in Yeongam, South Korea. Then we’ll see where the Grand Prix season goes from here, with a newly crowned champion on the throne.
