Sunday the 13th of May saw an exhilarating Formula 1 Gran Premio De Espana Santander 2012. This is the event also known as The Spanish Grand Prix.
It was held at the Circuit de Catalunya in the Barcelona. The track is considered an all rounder, with its corners and extended straights. This is somewhat appropriate, as it was the site of another incredible twist in Grand Prix.
2012 is shaping up to be the season of shocks. This follows Sebastian Vettel’s slow beginning, before winning the last race in Bahrain. That is not to mention Nico Rosberg’s triumph in China. The Spanish Grand Prix moreover will go down in the annals for an amazing win for the Williams team.
Spain was their first victory in eight years as well as the inaugural win for its driver, Pastor Maldonado. This is despite the Venezuelan having only been driving grand prix since 2011.
He found himself in a strategic mano a mano with Fernando Alonso. The local hero, racing for Ferrari, came in second place in front of his home crowd.
The Spaniard finished in front of Kimi Raikkonen, with Lotus-Renault, who finished in third position. His teammate Romain Grosjean was in fourth, while. Sauber-Ferrari’s Kamui Kobayashi was fifth.
Sebastian Vettel on the other hand, victorious in Bahrain, could only manage sixth place. But he is now tied on top of the leader board, with Alonso. That other David whom had already defeated Goliath this season, Nico Rosberg with Mercedes, took seventh spot.
Lewis Hamilton may have finished the qualifying rounds in pole position, but he was disqualified when it was deemed he had insufficient fuel to return to the pits. Hamilton ended up starting from the back of the racing grid. The eventual winner
Maldonado was awarded pole instead. The Brit however pressed on to finish the race in eighth. This put him ahead of McLaren compatriot Jenson Button, who was ninth.
