There is a major sporting event taking place in the UK this weekend. Wimbledon may be on everybody’s lips, but motor racing fans are in for a smashing time as well. This is because the 2012 Formula 1 Santander British Grand Prix is being held at Silverstone, in Northamptonshire, on Sunday the 8th of July. The flag will be lowered at 1pm on the dot.
The British Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious, well known races of the season. This meet, along with the Italian Grand Prix, is amongst the longest running Formula One Grand Prix races in the world. It first took place in 1926 and now, all these years later; it is still going strong.
Silverstone has held the British Grand Prix for over six decades, going back to 1950. The race now goes on for an intense, adrenaline packed 52 laps. This is over a length of 5.901 km (3.667 mi), at the Silverstone Circuit.
The race was won last year by Fernando Alonso, the only man to have won more than one meet this year. The Spanish driver actually triumphed in the previous race of the season, at the European Grand Prix in Valencia.
There has been a lot of talk leading up to the British Grand Prix. There have been defiant war cries from the Ferrari team, whom believe they have the tools to triumph in Silverstone. Could it be a Ferrari one two, after Alonso’s victory last time out?
There has also been something of resurgence in the Red Bull team. This is after Sebastian Vettel’s impressive start from pole in the last race, despite the fact he later had to retire.
McLaren are also said to be well up to the challenge, reportedly being well suited to Silverstone’s conditions. Furthermore, Lewis Hamilton is reportedly confident that he could follow Alonso’s lead in Valencia and win on home soil. Could it possibly be a win for a Brit in Britain?
