What a weekend it has been for Mark Webber. The Australian has just signed a new contract to keep driving for Red Bull next season after winning this year’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
The victory on Sunday makes Webber, alongside Fernando Alonso, the only driver to have won more than one race in 2012. This is Webber’s second win, having previously triumphed in Monaco in May. His rival Alonso, on the other hand, was victorious in Malaysia and at the previous race this season, the European Grand Prix in Valencia.
It is somehow fitting that these two drivers should be on an even keel when it comes to their number of wins. They were reportedly neck and neck during the race at Silverstone. Alonso started the meet from pole and took a steady lead. It was a change in Red Bull’s approach to their tyres, switching from softs to hards after the last pit stop, which allowed Webber to catch up.
He would eventually overtake the Spaniard on the 48th lap and finish the British Grand Prix in first place, with Alonso coming second. Webber’s team mate, Sebastian Vettel, completed the race in third spot. He was ahead of Felipe Massa, whom, by all accounts, had an exceptional race, despite finishing fourth. This resulted in Red Bull Ferrari having two drivers on the winners podium.
The next two positions were taken by Lotus drivers, with Kimi Räikkönen in fifth place and Romain Grosjean coming sixth. Michael Schumacher, with Mercedes, was seventh. It didn’t turn out to be a magnificent day for McLaren moreover. The team’s drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, finished the race in eighth and tenth place respectively. It seems the British Grand Prix wasn’t such a great homecoming for those UK drivers after all.
